Return to Community Sports End of Covid

Rebuilding Community Through Sport: Our Journey After COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic left many communities feeling disconnected, isolated, and uncertain. For people living in deprived areas, these challenges were often felt even more deeply, with limited access to physical activity, social opportunities, and community support. Our sports project was created to help change that.

Our aim was simple, to re-engage the local community through fun, accessible sports sessions that welcomed everyone, regardless of age, ability, or experience.

Bringing People Back Together

After years of lockdowns and restrictions, many people lacked confidence to return to group activities. Our sessions provided a safe, friendly environment where participants could reconnect with others, rebuild routines, and enjoy being active again. The focus was never just on sport, but on connection, wellbeing, and inclusion.

By hosting regular sessions in familiar local spaces, we removed common barriers such as cost, travel, and fear of judgment. This helped create a welcoming atmosphere where community members felt comfortable attending and returning week after week.

A Variety of Activities for Everyone

To ensure there was something for everyone, our project delivered a wide range of activities, including:

  • Hockey – encouraging teamwork, coordination, and confidence

  • Rounders – a fun, social game that appealed to all ages

  • Aerobics – boosting fitness, energy, and mental wellbeing

  • And more – with sessions adapting to the interests and needs of participants

Offering a mix of games kept sessions exciting and allowed people to try new activities they may not have experienced before. This variety played a key role in maintaining engagement and motivation.

Positive Impact Beyond Physical Activity

The benefits of the project extended far beyond physical fitness. Participants reported improvements in mental health, reduced feelings of loneliness, and a stronger sense of belonging. Friendships were formed, confidence grew, and many individuals who had become inactive during the pandemic rediscovered their enjoyment of movement and social interaction.

For some, the project became a stepping stone to further involvement in sport, volunteering, or other community initiatives.

Looking Ahead

Our sports project has shown how powerful community-based physical activity can be, especially in the recovery period after COVID-19. By listening to the community and offering inclusive, enjoyable sessions, we helped rebuild connections and create a positive, supportive environment.

As we move forward, we remain committed to expanding opportunities, reaching more people, and continuing to use sport as a tool for positive change within our community.
